It is often the most difficult decision when buying a new car. No, we are not talking about which brand or model one will buy but rather which color. Unless you are buying a Ferrari and want the iconic Ferrari red or similarly a Lamborghini in its iconic yellow, chances are you will spend days and days trying to decide if the car or your dreams should be black, grey, blue or any other color. BMW has a solution for your problem. The new BMW iX Flow can change its exterior color with the touch of a button.
Yes, you read that right. The answer is an electrophoretic film that covers the body of the car which contains microcapsules that have a similar diameter to that of a human hair. Each capsule has differently charged colored particles which become visible once an electric field is applied. The utility goes far beyond visual preferences. Imagine a hot summer day in Southern France. You may want to set the color to white so that a lot of the sunlight gets reflected and keeps the car cooler. Or imagine a sunny winter day in the Alps. Perhaps you are going to change the color to black so that the sunlight gets absorbed and acts as an additional heat source.
Of course, there are also the design application: we have already seen a version of the car that is part black and part white. Thinking about a specific design pattern. Previously you had to go through the cumbersome and labor-intensive process of getting your car wrapped. We can easily see how BMW might launch an app in the future that lets you customize designs and with the tip of your finger, the hood or the side of the car will display your creation. It seems you will only be limited by your imagination in terms of how many designs you can create.
