British luxury car manufacturer Bentley has announced its first venture into the NFT space by launching 208 NFTs on the carbon-neutral polygon network. It isn’t exactly clear how the NFTs will look but Bentley did disclose that it will be unique artwork created by Bentley Design and offer unique access and exclusive rewards to its owners. The NFT drop will likely be the first in a series designed to improve Bentley’s standing in the Web3 ecosystem.
The company did not randomly choose to release 208 NFTs. The number also symbolizes the top speed of its currently fastest Grand Tourer (Continental GT Speed) as well as the production run of the iconic R-Type Continental of 1952 – a car that is often described to be the inspiration for the modern-day Bentley DNA. Moreover, the collection will be launched on Polygon – a platform that is already carbon-neutral and has in fact pledged to become carbon-negative by 2030.
Alan Favey, a member of the Board for Sales and Marketing described the NFT launch as follows: “Bentley customers are living their lives online, purchasing luxury goods with digital currency, and establishing businesses in the Metaverse. We’ve always engaged our customers where they explore their passions, and today that means being present in digital marketplaces and offering NFT assets. We’ve seen how NFTs have raised the profiles of both art and artist, and we believe the same can happen in the luxury automotive space.”
Bentley is the latest of luxury brands that have embraced NFTs and the metaverse. We have previously written about Philipp Plein and McLaren doing the same. The race for the leading Web3 brand in heating up and doing so fast. It is very likely that more brands will make similar announcements soon so stay tuned for more coverage.
