It’s been a busy red carpet season this summer, concluding with the MTV Video Music Awards! Before Fashion Week season quickly approaches, I decided to round out the summer with be best and worst looks from the past TWO weeks. Here we go!
BEST DRESSED
1. VANESSA WILLIAMS
At 52 years old, Vanessa Williams ages even better than fine wine. She attended the USTA Opening Night Gala in NYC in an elegant pale mint gown with chic dolman sleeves and a classic silhouette. Her look was the perfect example of simplistic style at its finest! The color was flattering on her skin tone and it was wrapped and cinched in all the right places. Age ain’t nothing but a number!
2. ROSARIO DAWSON
I’m a sucker for a bold print and this Ella Moss jumpsuit was striking on Rosario Dawson at the A-List Anniversary party in Beverly Hills. Her nude sandals and clutch perfectly complemented the print and, most importantly, she looked comfortable and stylish at the same time. Trust me: every woman needs a few jumpsuits in her closet!
3. KENDALL JENNER
Kendall may be the most fashion conscious of the entire Kardashian clan; after all, she is a legitimate supermodel. At her mother’s cover launch for Haute Living magazine in Los Angeles, Jenner showed off her edgy inspiration in an olive Bella Dahl tunic with a moto leather jacket. The obvious highlight of this look, however, is the over-the-knee Givenchy patent leather boots, which are reportedly worth $2,995! Take this as a style lesson: any basic outfit can be amplified with fabulous statement shoes.
4. EVA LONGORIA
Before the fabled style rule of wearing white after Labor Day, Eva Longoria flaunted a fierce look at the launch event for the new LG ProBake Convection range. Her David Koma dress delivered sex appeal from the sheer and cutout detailing as well as a sophisticated midi hem length. The nude sandals were also a smart choice for her skin complexion and the overt magnetism of the dress.
5. AMAL CLOONEY
It’s nice to see that working professionals know how to have fun too! Amal Clooney was a stunning vision at the Casamigos Tequila launch event in Ibiza, Spain wearing a shimmering Vionnet cocktail dress. She and her husband socialized the night away and Mrs. Clooney proved that she is not shy about her fabulous legs, which clearly go on for days! Her thin frame allowed for the dress to drape her body so beautifully and I’m sure Mr. Clooney had no complaints.
WORST DRESSED
1. JULIANNE HOUGH
She is undoubtedly a very talented dancer, but this Monique Lhuillier dress on Julianne Hough was a really bad move. She attended the Emmy Awards nominee reception in Los Angeles in a beautiful dress that just did not flatter her body well. First of all, a fashionable one-shoulder dress is a dime a dozen nowadays. Secondly, the Serpiu lacquered white clutch is practically invisible against the dress. I didn’t mind the Stuart Weitzman sandals, but not even they could pull this look together.
2. CIARA
This was very disappointing because Ciara has become one of my fashion favorites over the past couple of years. However, this Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture ensemble at the MTV Video Music Awards was desperate. Vauthier is one of my favorite couturiers, but Ciara does not need that much fringe covering her incredible body. We want to see those legs in all of their glory, not peek at them!
3. KIRSTEN DUNST
If you’re going to wear a combination of sheer and leather, you basically need the confidence of Beyoncé. Kirsten Dunst appeared at the “Sleeping With Other People” screening in Los Angeles in a blouse + skirt combo that seemed like somebody else’s outfit. In face, she and Julianne Hough should exchange their looks from this week’s column and thank me later!
4. KIM KARDASHIAN WEST
This was yet another fashion disappointment at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. Kim Kardashian West watched her brilliantly passionate husband accept the Video Vanguard award in a Balman Resort 2016 dress that, quite frankly, will look much better on her after she snaps back from her second child. As much as I love designer Olivier Rousteing’s work, I did not like the color, the front slit, or the pockets, but I’m sure her husband would gladly disagree with me.
5. LORDE
I would much rather see singer Lorde in her usual gothic aesthetic than this rainbow Mary Katrantzou dress at the Republic Records VMAs after party in West Hollywood. She may be going in a different direction for her next album, but she should try sticking to one or two colors out of the crayon box because she’ll ‘never be royal’ dressing like that!
