Landing on Butter was an easy choice. Naturally, the first thing that came to mind was ‘I think I remember this from Gossip Girl’, sadly its not that Butter (its Lafayette Street location has since closed, much to my Queen B headband-donning chagrin), but its close enough to make my Blair Waldorf dreams come true. That, and the menu + the outdoor bar was enough to bring it to the top of my list.
Its new midtown location is walkable for those brave enough to hoof-it in heels, otherwise its just a seamless $8 uber ride away from Penn. I hoofed-it there, and soothed my now blistered feet in an uber on the way back to Penn to catch the train home…thankfully, both food and drink were so satisfying I’d forgotten about my aching feet the whole evening.
This swanky, midtown spot gave way to a surprisingly friendly and accommodating staff. Check 1 for a successful evening. The drink menu was abundant, and their signature cocktails all sounded like good options, who doesn’t want a Tall, Dark & Handsome? For me though, I prefer to go with a simple vodka soda so as not to (drink my calories) distract the tastebuds from the main attraction – the food.
The Restaurant Week prix fixe menu offers 3 choices of appetizer, entree, and 2 options for dessert. When I aired my grievances about the ‘too spicy’ Cascabel chile on my Florida shrimp a la plancha appetizer, the staff was able to accommodate me by placing the chiles on the side (check 2 for a successful evening). For an entree I was looking for something light and was impressed by the fact that not only did Butter include a vegan option on their restaurant week menu, it was gluten free as well. The white cloud cauliflower steak was an absolute delight to the tastebuds, and left me just full enough – while still saving room for dessert (check 3 for a successful evening!). The dark chocolate semifreddo was not my absolute favorite, but the impressive plating and presentation made up for that.
While dessert left me wondering if my other option would have been a better choice, the rest of the evening went off without a hitch. The waiters are friendly, the kitchen staff accommodating, and the atmosphere fun & buzzing in typical New York form. The clientele seemed to be a bit more business world than Gossip Girl, but I guess we all have to grow up sometime.
