Do you remember in the movie “The Devil Wears Prada”, the magazine’s editor in chief sarcastically comments on the idea of floral in spring season being too “groundbreaking”?. Of course I agreed until Chanel showed me what a little magic can do on a cliché theme.
In Chanel 2015 S/S couture show, the Grand Palais became a huge circular botanical glasshouse. As the show started, paper flowers appear in the center of the garden which emphasized the dimensional feel in the palace while creating a strong contrast between Spring’s cozy atmosphere with a sharp paper edge. The combination makes the floral spring more modern and edgy. Just when you are wondering what is next, the first look comes up, and it was a bright orange suit that lit up the show – Love! Following with electric blue, pollen yellow, and hot pink, the colors were so vibrant and fresh that you can just smell that modern energy flow through the Chanel garden.
While the collection show’s Chanel’s traditional tweed suits, the accessories also caught my attention. The oversized wide-brimmed hats with a black tulle veil creates a mid-century’s mysterious romance fantasy that rhymes perfectly with the floral. The skinny lengthy belts are also on-point and perfect for the season. Married were chiffon and silk fabrics in many of the dresses, which looked both flowing and agile. The countless pearls, sequins, and delicate motifs delivered the best of the ateliers’ expertise.
The whole show: poetic and modern, romantic and fun. Great job Karl.
