After a morning of shows at Bridal Fashion Week, I head over to Mulberry Street for a look at Creatures of Comfort’s ready-to-wear collection at their flagship location. Ever since Creative Director and Designer Jade Lai founded the brand twelve years ago in Los Angeles, Creatures of Comfort has been the go-to for It girls shopping for unique pieces that emphasize ease over looking overtly done. Lai’s vision extended beyond a fashion line and into a lifestyle brand that integrates downtown cool with uptown luxury. I arrive early and spend some time talking to the lovely associates about their favorite pieces, which range from timeless basics made for your ideal fall wardrobe to jewel-toned velvet tops, and eagerly browse the ready-to-wear selection.
When Lauren Piven, the brand’s Press Manager, arrives, we start pulling a bunch of to-die-for pieces. Back in February when the collection debuted on the runway, the brand’s press release stated, “For Fall 2017, Creatures of Comfort creative director Jade Lai drew inspiration from the great outdoors and her take on “glamping,” interpreting this into a high-low myriad of signature oversized proportions and luxe fabrications with utilitarian detailing.” While I’m not sure her pieces would be practical for days spent in a tent and hiking around muddy paths, Lai’s focus on the great outdoors for inspiration is evident in her selection of sleek overalls with drawstring cuffs and her color palette that can only be described as procured from woodland scenery illuminated on a fall day by the brightest sun beams.
Lauren tells me, that despite the elevated, chic overtones of Creatures of Comfort’s line, not to overlook the personality of the clothing and even of the space itself. Picture camel-toned overalls worn over a gold Lurex turtleneck and tied together with their iconic metallic bucket bag (or even their embossed crocodile bucket bag if you’re not that out there). Imagine stealing the scene in a Houndstooth silk twill dress in a glaring hot pink and saturated red color scheme instead of the classic black and white design. Daydream about a wool coat in high voltage fuchsia that kisses neutrals, navy, oxblood and all other traditional fall colors goodbye.
There is so much to take in; as I walk through the shoes section with Lauren, she points out an oversized pillow in the shape of a hand that is covered in designer and vintage patchwork that film sets like to loan. I had walked around the shoes section several times and had not noticed the pillow before Lauren pointed it out, not because it wasn’t obvious and beautiful but because I was entirely absorbed by the jaw-dropping clothes. The pillow is made in Austria by Wiener Times and is worth checking out for your next home renovation as a jocular, and practical, conversation piece. Behind the racks is an outdoor event space that hosts community gatherings which is further evidence of the brand’s ethos that luxury does not have to be unapproachable.
Everything in the store is about texture; I can’t help but fall in love with the velvet, the soft basics and the heavy cotton blend pants with detachable pockets that are sure to rule street style. When I point to the Gloria vinyl slingbacks with a satin pointy toe and shower it with compliments and Lauren says, “Emma Watson has those!”, I’m basically at a loss for words. Lauren also informs me that Creatures of Comfort is back on the West Coast in the Sunset Junction area of Silver Lake in an homage to the label’s California origins. Head over to these cool locations or check out their expansive e-commerce selection and see for yourself GGM’s special curation of pieces that you should be coveting this season. Their timeless quality and enduring personality ensure that you’ll love them for many more seasons to come.
