If you have not yet heard of the infamous Diner en Blanc, than what exactly have you been doing? Once a year in a select part of the world, thousands of people -dressed in white from head to toe- meet in a central location, city by city. Keeping tradition, organizers keep the location secret until the last minute.
The famed tradition began in 1988 in Paris, and this year celebrated its 27th rendition. The exclusivity of this event makes it all the more alluring. This ritzy dinner is for the privileged few who manage to get an invitation: those who have attended the event previously, and those invited by someone who has. The invited guests only find out the dinner’s location one hour before it begins. You may not know where you’re headed, but at least you’ll know what to wear.
This pop-up dinner does not come without its rules, of course, and while some rules are meant to be broken these surely are not…after all, you wouldn’t want to be the one responsible for ruining the fun of 10s of thousands of people, right? Simple enough to follow, first and foremost as a guest you are expected to adorn yourself in all white, head to toe, no color, no exceptions. You are also expected to bring your own picnic table and basket, chairs, white table cloth, and glassware. It has been said that guests are only to drink wine and champagne throughout the evening – but who wouldn’t comply with that rule? As a guest of this elusive dinner you absolutely must leave the space in which you dined as pristine as you found it.
Started by a group of friends looking to dine in some of Paris’ most unattainable areas, the tradition has upheld the high standard of location. Previous Diner en Blanc pop-ups have occurred in the gardens of Palais-Royal, the Tuileries Gardens near the Louvre Museum, the grounds of the Eiffel Tower, and even the distinguished Palace of Versailles in 2012.
So start fluffing your closet with the perfect white ensemble, grab the Veuve Clicquot, and patiently await your invitation…. patience is a virtue and champagne makes waiting all the more pleasant.
