Whether its in New York, London, Milan, or Paris, it takes designers months of preparation to put on a 3-5 minute spectacular fashion week show. And trust me, it goes by quick! Let’s go behind the scenes to view firsthand the glitz, the glamour, the chaos, and the shows from front row to backstage.
Shows take place in various hot venues around town. They are either listed in the official fashion week schedule online, or designers may choose to keep it discreet and a secret till the last minute- by printing the venue on the invitation or by sending a simple email just moments before the show.
The Beginning
For the special exclusive shows, each seat is labeled with the invitee’s name and company/ affiliate/ magazine they represent. i.e.: “Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus”. This mitigates the issue of ‘sneak ins’ and ‘posers’ pretending to sit front row. The goodie bags are usually for front rows, so I don’t blame them. Media, Press, and Celebrities get special clearance and are the first ones to arrive so that they can get comfortable and set up. Celebs and Media are also invited backstage to interview the designer and to feature the overall scene.
What You Don’t See – Backstage
Each backstage garment rack contains a larger than life model board, which consists of her picture, her details such as her dress size, shoe size, hair style, height, affiliate agency, and the dresses she is scheduled to wear, along with her accessories, shoes, and jewelry.
Media and Press Set up backstage to photograph and interview models, designers, and the entire team.
Dry Runs and Rehearsals take place both backstage and before the crowd comes in.

After The Show
Garments are quickly packed up so that the $10,000 + Gowns from the Naeem Khan Show are safe.
Models Strike A Pose for the Media.
The Designers heave a sigh of relief after the finale and are interviewed by select press, media, and celebrities backstage. Now they start the process for next seasons’ collections which will be upon them sooner than later.
