With Six Indian Movies screened this year, India was named as the ‘country of honour’ at the Marché du Film, the world’s busiest movie market and business side of the Cannes film festival. An Indian Pavilion tent was set up along side other film distribution tents along the sea where numerous Indian stars, fashionistas, and notoriety took to the infamous Cannes Red Carpet.
The 75th Cannes Market which runs alongside to the film festival commenced May 17th and ended the 28th with a lavish closing ceremony. Celebrating the occasion, information and broadcasting Minister and the head of the Indian delegation at the prestigious event, Anurag Thakur tweeted, “A historic moment as India the 1st ‘Country of Honour’ at Marche Du Films @Festival_Cannes gets set to manifest into the content hub of the world and the preferred post production hub for global film makers.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said “ delighted about India’s participation as a “Country of Honour” as India celebrates its 75th year of Independence, 75th anniversary of Cannes Film Festival and 75 yrs of Indo-French diplomatic ties enhance pride associated with the momentous milestone”. He wrote, “Rich heritage and cultural diversity are India’s strengths. We have a lot of stories to be explored. India possesses immense potential to become the content hub of the world. The Government of India remains steadfast in its efforts towards furthering ease of doing business in the film sector.” The prime Minister wished much success to this year’s festival in a statement he said, “This edition of Cannes Film Festival is special in many ways. Many Indian startups will showcase their strengths to the cinema world & Indian pavilion will display facets of Indian cinema.”
The origin of the festival first commenced in 1946 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, in South France, bringing together world renowned global filmmakers, actors, composers, producers, directors and composers. Nearly 20 films premiere “In Competition” each year, where they compete for the top prize — the Palme d’Or, translating to golden palm. Since then, various film, fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries along with well known actresses, models, influencers, set afoot showcasing the most glamorous annual fashion moments on the red carpet.
India has been no stranger for the past 20 years as Bollywood made its Cannes debut in 2002 with the screening of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’. The following year, Cannes veteran Aishwarya Rai became the first Indian woman to be a part of the international jury. This year, Actress Deepika Padukone was announced a member of the jury and long time Cannes veteran and L’oreal ambassador Aishwarya Rai, notoriously made an appearance among other Indian stars.
