Surviving Fashion Month: Skincare Tips for Fashionistas
by Lily Sage
It’s that time of year, fashion week has us constantly staring at our Instagram and Twitter feed to see firsthand first views of the new fall winter collections. The magic started in New York, then headed across the pond to London, after that it touched down in Milan, and is now hitting Paris, the mother of all fashion weeks. February and March are more accurately described as ‘Fashion Months’. During this short but sweet time, designers all over the world are showing their collections. It’s about art, design, glamour, and getting a precious glimpse of the newest trends before anyone else. It’s also a time to mingle with models, designers, celebrities, makeup artists, and moguls in one fabulous moment.
A whirlwind of time zones, with a jam-packed schedule of back to back shows, and very late nights can take a serious toll on your skin. In the midst of the fun it is difficult to maintain a consistent skincare routine, and by the time it’s all over your skin could end up over-caffeinated and dehydrated. Here are three easy tips for maintaining healthy skin in the midst of this beautiful madness.
Tip #1: Hydration is key!
If you drink water daily now is the time to increase your intake and if you don’t usually drink enough be sure to have a bottle or two in your bag. Your body is sixty-percent water and your lungs are ninety-percent water. Water helps to energize your muscles, keep your skin healthy and flush toxins from the body. In between mimosas, add an extra glass of water before your next show.
Tip #2: Don’t Skip Your Nighttime Routine
I know it’s very tempting to hit the pillow and skip the skincare after an exhausting day or if you are jetlagged, but going to bed with your makeup is one of the biggest beauty mistakes you can make. Going to bed with your makeup on leads to not only clogged pores, but can accelerate aging because of free radicals that break down collagen and lead to fine lines and wrinkles, and inhibit your skin’s natural nighttime renewal process. Pollution, excess dirt and oil, and makeup need to be completely removed at the end of the day. A quick and effective way to remove makeup is with a cleansing oil. It will remove makeup easily without stripping the skin or leaving a greasy residue. One of my favorites is the Josie Maran Cleansing Oil. It smells lovely, hydrates, and takes off all my makeup in minute with the help of Argan Oil, Grapeseed Oil, and Safflower Oil. Available in Sephora.
As much as I love my afternoon latte, caffeine is not a substitute for eight hours of sleep. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. While we sleep our bodies repairs itself from damage incurred during the day. When it starts getting close to midnight I know it’s time to say goodnight because my night cream is at home waiting for me. Clarins Multiactive Night Cream is an anti-aging moisturizer that gives your skin a gorgeous glow and is great for all skin types. It is formulated with Shea Butter to hydrate and Kiwi Extract to nourish, while combating fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will wake up bright and replenished. Available in Ultra.
Tip #3: Prep Your Skin For The Plane
Traveling from one exciting and breathtakingly beautiful city to another is one of the most exciting aspects of fashion month. But long hours in the air can put a great deal of stress on your skin. I suggest using a moisturizing mask the night before, or better yet the morning of your flight to infuse your skin with an intense boost of hydration. I love using my WHEN Travelmate sheet mask. Sheet masks are easy to travel with and are packed with treatment. The Travelmate sheet mask by WHEN is infused with a hydrating serum with Hyaluronic Acid and Chamomile. Simply apply the mask to your face and leave it on for thirty minutes. During the thirty minutes I usually take a power nap or finish up packing. After you remove the mask be sure to massage in the remaining serum into your skin and then follow with your moisturizer as you normally would. Available in Birchbox.
