When it comes to buying high-end bags, jewelry and other accessories, for most women it is more than just enjoying their latest fashion piece – it is also an investment. For a long time, Hermes dominated the resale value. But that has changed! Rebag has released its annual Clair report that analyzes how much of the original purchase price, brands retain at their resale. The 2022 Rebag Clair winner is the same one that also won in 2021. It is Telfar!
The brand was founded in 2005 by Telfar Clemens and its shopping bags have gone viral, frequently earning the nickname “Bushwick Birkin”. Most recently, the brand was frequently mentioned in one of Beyonce’s “Renaissance” album hits, creating even more buzz for the brand. According to the Rebag Clair report, Telfar bags are selling at 195% of their retail price on average! Some of the key ingredients to the success? For one, Telfar has been endorsed by major celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Madonna and Dua Lipa. Second, the brand has created a series of limited edition drops that sell out within minutes. Those who have missed out, will then have to pay higher prices on the secondary market to get their hands on the bag that are worn by their favorite celebrity.
There were some other changes in the Rebag Clair report this year. Both Chanel and Louis Vuitton have joined Hermes as Unicorns, meaning that their items retain on average more than 85% of their price in resale value. However, they still don’t match Hermes’ 103% average value retention – in other words, if you had bought any Hermes bag, on average you would have made some money when re-selling it this year. Part of Chanel’s success factor have also been its price increases. Since 2019, Chanel retail prices have risen by 50% according to the Rebag Clair report. So if you were eyeing a Chanel bag, you should make your decision sooner than later!
