We Caught up with model Ariel Dervin after the Yeezy Show to describe her experience and breaking into the Yeezy Show.
Kanye West debuted his Yeezy season 3 February 11th at New York Fashion Week, and his overall theme he tried to express was “slave refugees in Africa, I think specifically in Rwanda” said Ariel Dervin, an aspiring 20 year old model who by chance was recently discovered and brought on to the show. His audience brought in the likes of celebs and Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The line was filled with orange, red, beige, and nude hues; “you could really feel pain and passion at the same time”, said Dervin.
West and his team reached out through twitter to the public offering cast calls for potential models in his show, and I had a chance to speak to Ariel about her experience.
Dorin: Congrats on being in the Yeezy Show! How were you able to get in?
Ariel: It was unbelievable. I actually lied on the application telling them I lived in NYC not Chicago, because I honestly didn’t think I was going to get it. Next thing I know, I get an email telling me I was picked for the next round, the actual casting call, and to be there the next day. You know for a person who actually lives in NYC it would be easy, but obviously I didn’t live there. I called my friend up, asked her if I could stay with at her dorm, and I bought my ticket. While I’m at the airport, I get another email saying I’m automatically in the show! From then on it was like I was in a dream.
Dorin: Wow, that’s such a journey, but well worth it. I bet you were tweeting, taking pictures, and snap chatting the whole time.
Ariel: No! Actually they took all our phones away and made us sign a confidentially agreement, because they didn’t want anything leaked. In fact, they didn’t show any of the clothes until the day of.
Dorin: How were the other models that were chosen just like you? Were they all the same, appearance wise? Different? I only ask because West is never a traditional man.
Ariel: Actually, I was very surprised. We were all dark complexion, but besides that, we were all different. There were all sizes: small, tall, chubby, skinny, and really thick. It was a combination of people. But, the show was one of the most powerful messages I ever witnessed. We had to look like oppressed people because that was his message and you could just feel the whole energy in the stadium; it was really strong! At the end, it turned into a dance party where celebrities would come up and dance; it was a nice vibe.
Dorin: Not your traditional fashion show
Ariel: Not at all.
